Who Is Leading Agentic Commerce in 2026? A Layer-by-Layer Map

TL;DR

  • Leadership is layered. Five layers matter: AI shopping surfaces, protocols and standards, payments and trust, commerce platforms, and consumer agents on devices.
  • Live checkout is concentrated. Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, Microsoft Copilot Checkout and Perplexity's Instant Buy are among the clearest in-experience checkouts for US shoppers today.
  • ChatGPT changed course. OpenAI said on March 24, 2026 that merchants would use their own checkout while it focused on product discovery.
  • The prize is large but unproven. McKinsey projects $900 billion to $1 trillion in US agent-orchestrated B2C retail revenue by 2030. That is a projection, not a measurement.
  • Trust is the limiter. In a Gartner survey of 322 US consumers, willingness to let AI make purchase decisions topped out at 11%.
  • Glance's position: a consumer shopping agent on device surfaces (phones, TVs, iPhone through Siri, and Lenovo and Motorola devices through Qira), with native PayPal checkout for supported merchants. Glance is the author of this guide, so see the disclosure below.

No single company leads agentic commerce in 2026, because leadership differs by layer. Google, Shopify and PayPal show the most live checkout evidence. Visa, Mastercard and Stripe lead on payment trust. Consumer agents such as Glance work at the device level. ChatGPT scaled back native checkout in March 2026. The evidence follows, layer by layer.

Agentic commerce, where AI agents discover, compare and buy on a shopper's behalf, is moving fast, and most "top companies" lists blur very different kinds of players. A payments network, a protocol, a chat assistant and a lock-screen shopping agent do different jobs. This guide separates them, shows what is live, announced or scaled back as of November 2, 2026, and cites a source for each claim.

How We Define "Leading"

Disclosure: Glance wrote this guide and appears in it. We applied the same criteria to every company, including Glance, and we state where Glance falls short.

A company is described as leading in a layer only when it meets most of these tests:

  1. Live in production. Shoppers can use it today, not only in a press release or pilot.
  2. US availability. It works for US shoppers or merchants, which is where most agentic checkout is live.
  3. Named partners. It has named merchants, platforms or networks, not unnamed "partners."
  4. Verifiable numbers. It has a dated, sourced metric, or we say none is public.
  5. Open standards. It supports or helped create standards such as MCP, UCP or ACP, so merchants are not locked in.
  6. Recency. The evidence is dated 2025 or 2026. Older claims are marked.

We label every item Live, Announced or Scaled back. Where trackers disagree on a status, we say so. Last updated: November 2, 2026.

The Map at a Glance

Each layer has different leaders. A company that is strong in one layer is often absent from the others.

One familiar name is missing from the live-checkout evidence: ChatGPT. OpenAI announced a shift away from native Instant Checkout in March 2026 toward product discovery and merchant-run checkout. It remains a major discovery surface.

Layer 1: AI Shopping Surfaces, Where Shoppers Actually Buy

This layer is the front door: the assistants and search experiences where shoppers ask, compare and, increasingly, buy. Status below is for US shoppers as of November 2, 2026.

TV checkout availability has not been disclosed (see Layer 5)PayPal checkout October 15, 2026; Siri integration announced September 30, 2026Live (PayPal checkout); Siri announced

Why ChatGPT changed course. A Walmart executive told Wired that conversion from Instant Checkout was three times lower than when shoppers clicked through to Walmart's own properties. The lesson for this layer: discovery scaled faster than in-chat checkout.

Layer 2: Protocols and Standards, The Shared Language

Protocols let a shopper's agent talk to a merchant's catalog and a payment provider without a custom integration for every pair. This is where open standards matter most.

ProtocolBacked byWhat it doesStatus
UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol)Google, with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and WalmartCatalog, cart and checkout across AI surfaces; designed to work with MCP, A2A and AP2Live and expanding
ACP (Agentic Commerce Protocol)OpenAI and StripeAgent checkout, extended in March 2026 to product feeds for discovery in ChatGPTLive; native checkout scaled back
AP2 (Agent Payments Protocol)Google with payment partnersAuthorizing payments made by agents; handed to the FIDO Alliance on April 29, 2026Live

A2A (Agent2Agent)GoogleLets one agent hand tasks to anotherLive
Trusted Agent ProtocolVisaAuthenticates agent-initiated card transactionsRolling out

Takeaway: no single protocol has won. The practical position for merchants is to support more than one, which is why platforms such as Shopify, PayPal and Stripe back both ACP and UCP.

Layer 3: Payments and Trust Infrastructure

When an agent spends money, the payment layer decides whether the shopper, the merchant and the bank trust the purchase. This layer has the deepest incumbents.

Coinbase (x402)Stablecoin micropayments between agents165 million transactions and about $50 million in cumulative volume by late April 2026, averaging about 30 centsLive, but not yet retail-scale

Takeaway: the card networks and PayPal lead on trust because they already hold the credentials. The design goal is that the agent never handles your card number. As Shopify's Rohit Mishra put it, “the agent never sees the buyer's card.”

Layer 4: Commerce Platforms and Retailers

This layer decides how many merchants are reachable by agents without custom work.

Retailers are hedging. Deloitte's 2026 Retail Industry Global Outlook found 81% of surveyed retail executives think generative AI will weaken brand loyalty by 2027, so many want to join agent platforms without handing over the customer relationship.

Layer 5: Consumer Agents on Devices, and Where Glance Fits

The last layer is the shopper's own agent: the one that lives on the phone, TV or PC and starts the journey before a search. Most assistants in Layer 1 wait for a prompt. A device-level agent meets shoppers on the lock screen, the home screen of a connected TV or a voice assistant.

Amazon runs a closed version of this with Alexa for Shopping. Glance is the open-architecture version: Glance, your intelligent shopping agent, is built to work across mobile, TV and brand websites, with agentic shopping at its core.

The numbers we can cite. Glance is embedded across more than 60 million mobile and CTV devices, through partners including Samsung, Motorola, DirecTV, Google's Android TV and two of the top three US mobile operators (per the PayPal release). Glance leadership has said the platform has about 14 million monthly users in the US, as reported by NewsBytes.

Where Glance does not lead. Being honest about the map makes it more useful:

  • Payments. Glance does not own the payment layer. It relies on partners such as PayPal and is expected to use Mastercard Agent Connect.
  • Protocols. Glance builds on open standards but is not one of the bodies that sets them.
  • Rollout. The Lenovo Qira integration and the True Fit fit guidance are announced, with timing set by the partners, so they are not yet proof of scale. Shopping through Qira also hands off to the retailer's site to complete the purchase.

Where Glance does lead. It is a consumer shopping agent present on several device surfaces at once, connected to merchants through feeds, PayPal checkout and, for developers, Glance MCP. Merchants on Shopify can add try-on and AI styling through the free Glance for Shopify app. This is the position Glance can support with evidence. It is not an infrastructure claim.

Which Layer Matters To You? A Decision Guide

If you are a...The question to askWhere to start
ShopperWhere can I buy through an agent, and who approves the purchase?Try Google AI Mode or Gemini, Copilot or Perplexity for in-experience checkout. For a personal agent on your phone, TV or PC, try Glance. Keep purchase approval on
Shopify merchantAre my products visible to agents, and does checkout still work?Check the Agentic sales channel in your Shopify admin and confirm your store is eligible for Shopify Catalog. Glance AI for Shopify adds selfie try-on and AI styling on product pages
Enterprise or non-Shopify merchantIs my product data accurate enough for an agent to act on?Clean your product feed (price, stock, shipping), connect it through a feed platform or Google Merchant Center, and ask your processor about agent tokens. Glance's Productsup partnership shows one route
DeveloperWhich protocols should I build on?Support more than one of UCP, ACP and MCP. See Glance MCP for commerce tools such as visual search, style recommendations and try-on
Platform, OEM or telcoHow do I add shopping to my devices without building it?Look at device-level agents.  Lenovo and Motorola Qira is one example of embedding a shopping agent in a system-level assistant

A Merchant Checklist: Getting Agent-Ready

  1. Fix your product data first. Agents act on price, stock, shipping time and returns. Stale data was one reason in-chat commerce struggled, so accuracy matters more than volume.
  2. Turn on the free routes. On Shopify, review the Agentic sales channel. On other stacks, check your platform's agent settings and Google Merchant Center.
  3. Support more than one protocol. Ask your platform or processor which of UCP and ACP it handles, since no single standard has won.
  4. Ask your processor about agent payments. Visa, Mastercard and PayPal each have agent programs that reach merchants through partners.
  5. Keep your own checkout fast. Many agent purchases, including ChatGPT's, still finish on the merchant's checkout.
  6. Measure with a holdout. AI-referred shoppers may simply have higher intent, so compare against a control group before crediting the agent.
  7. Decide your data policy. Retailers are weighing agent reach against customer ownership. Set rules for what you share and with whom.
  8. Review quarterly. This market changed materially several times in 2026, so re-check status each quarter.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Which brands are leading the agentic commerce revolution?

No single brand leads every layer. Google, Microsoft and Perplexity show live in-experience checkout. Stripe, PayPal, Visa and Mastercard lead on payment trust. Shopify leads on merchant reach. Glance works at the device level: embedded on 60 million-plus devices, with native PayPal checkout for supported merchants. ChatGPT remains a major discovery surface but scaled back native checkout in March 2026.

2. Who are the leading agentic commerce infrastructure companies?

Infrastructure spans protocols, payments and merchant connectivity. Google (UCP, AP2, A2A), OpenAI and Stripe (ACP) and Visa (Trusted Agent Protocol) lead on protocols. Stripe, PayPal, Visa and Mastercard lead on payments. Shopify and Commerce.com connect merchants. Glance is a consumer agent that builds on this infrastructure rather than providing it.

3. What are the leading agentic commerce platforms in 2026?

Platforms where shoppers can buy through an agent include Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity, plus Amazon's closed Alexa for Shopping. Glance offers a device-level agent with native PayPal checkout. ChatGPT is a leading discovery platform, but purchases generally finish on the merchant's own checkout.

4. Did ChatGPT stop doing agentic commerce?

No. OpenAI announced a shift away from native Instant Checkout in March 2026 and said merchants would use their own checkout while ChatGPT focuses on product discovery. The Agentic Commerce Protocol continues and now supports product feeds. A Walmart executive reported in-chat conversion about three times lower than click-through, one reason for the change.

5. What is the difference between a protocol and a platform?

A protocol is a shared set of rules, such as UCP, ACP or MCP, that lets agents, merchants and payment providers communicate. A platform is a product people use, such as Google AI Mode, Copilot or Glance. Protocols make platforms interoperable, so merchants support a protocol once and reach many platforms.

6. What is the difference between ACP and UCP?

ACP, from OpenAI and Stripe, began as a checkout standard for ChatGPT and now also supports product discovery feeds. UCP, from Google with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, covers catalog, cart and checkout across Google AI Mode and Gemini. Many platforms, including PayPal, support both.

7. Is agentic commerce live in the US today?

Partly. Checkout inside an AI experience is reported live for eligible US merchants in Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity. Amazon and Walmart run their own agents. Visa and Mastercard agent payments are still rolling out through partners. Most programs are US-first, so check each company's current status.

8. How big could agentic commerce get?

McKinsey projects agent-orchestrated revenue of $900 billion to $1 trillion in US B2C retail by 2030, and $3 trillion to $5 trillion globally. These are projections, not measurements. Gartner found consumer willingness to let AI make purchase decisions topped out at 11%, so adoption may be gradual.

9. Where does Glance fit in agentic commerce?

Glance is a consumer shopping agent on device surfaces: phones, connected TVs, iPhone through Siri and, as announced, Lenovo and Motorola Qira. It is embedded on 60 million-plus mobile and CTV devices, with native PayPal checkout for supported merchants. Qira shopping ends on the retailer's site. Glance builds on others' payment and protocol infrastructure.

10. How can merchants prepare for agentic commerce?

Start with accurate product data, since agents act on price, stock and shipping. Turn on free routes such as Shopify's Agentic sales channel, support more than one protocol, ask your processor about agent payments, keep checkout fast, and measure lift against a control group. Review quarterly because the market changes quickly.

11. Is it safe to let an AI agent buy for me?

Safety depends on approval and credentials. Mastercard Agent Pay uses Verifiable Intent to confirm a purchase matches what you authorized, and Shopify says the agent never sees the buyer's card. Still, only a minority of consumers want AI deciding for them, so keep purchase approval switched on.

12. How was this ranking decided?

We judged each company by six tests: live in production, US availability, named partners, verifiable numbers, open standards support and recent evidence. We labeled each item live, announced or scaled back, and disclosed that Glance wrote this guide and applied the same tests to itself.
